SARD Initiative: Indigenous Peoples’ Initiative to establish cultural indicators for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development

Following an initial study undertaken by Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD) Initiative, FAO and the International Indian Treaty Council (IITC), the SARD Initiative and the IITC, with support from the Christensenfund and the government of Norway is now preparing an analytical paper to further understanding on cultural perspectives and practices of Indigenous Peoples in the context of agriculture, food systems, legal empowerment and rural development. The paper will include practical recommendations and indicators for indigenous peoples’ organizations, UN agencies and other development actors.

The paper, once prepared, will be subject to a global consultation among indigenous peoples who will ensure that it captures their views at global, regional and local levels. It will then be the focus of an inter-agency consultative process among food, agriculture and rural development focused UN agencies who will review it and agree on steps that can be taken.
