01 December: World Aids Day, Live and let live

Five people worldwide die of AIDS every minute of every day. HIV has hit every corner of the globe, infecting more than 42 million, women and children, 5 million of them last year alone.
World AIDS Day is a time to remember those who have died, learn more about HIV/AIDS, and care about the 42 million people worldwide who are living with this condition.

The World AIDS Day 2003 Campaign theme is Live and let live to increase awareness of HIV related stigma and discrimination. The two-year campaign (2002-2003) is focusing on eliminating stigma and discrimination in order to encourage people to break the silence and the barriers to effective HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

As considered as a growing problem, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS says: "Help us fight fear, shame, ignorance and injustice worldwide" and has targeted the HIV- related stigma and discrimination in a two year initiativ .

Stigma and discrimination are also considered as the major elements that fuel the expansion of the global HIV epidemic, creating a climate of fear and ignorance and a reluctance to confront rising infection rates. Those two elements are as well an important obstacle to effective prevention and care which combined to lack of knowledge and understanding, have raised the fence towards more responsibility about the disease.
