24 October: United Nations Day
Fifty eight years ago, the United Nations was founded to maintain international peace and security, promote economic and social development and the respect for basic human rights.
The United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945, when the
Charter had been ratified by China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States and by a majority of other signatories. Two years later, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring October 24th the United Nations Day, to be commemorated annually by all member-states of the United Nations.
Therefore, on 24 October, conferences, seminars, exhibitions are organized on the achievements and goals of the Organization, presenting the programmes of its specialized agencies.
