September 2006: Mid-term assessment of the World Food Summit Plan of action
Ten years have passed since the celebration of the World Food Summit (WFS) and the signing by all State members of FAO to the Plan of Action aimed at reducing hunger by 2015. In order to examine the progress made up to now, the FAO Committee of World Food Security will carry-out the mid-term review of the WFS Plan of Action next September 2006 on the basis of an analytical document prepared by FAO Secretariat.
As an integral part of this event, a multistakeholder dialogue will also take place with a “Special Forum” expected to count on the active participation of a broad and representative cross-section of civil society. This Forum will assess, together with State members, the global progress in reducing hunger and poverty consistent with the WFS objectives and the MDGs. Based on experiences with multi stakeholder dialogue, the Special Forum may suggest future actions to improve dialogue, consultation and understanding among all stakeholders and to promote effective initiatives to reduce hunger and poverty.
National Alliances Against Hunger are expected to participate in the Forum to exchange their experiences within the International Alliance Against Hunger. The Special Forum will also discuss follow-up activities to the International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD) which took place in March 2006 in Porto Alegre, Brazil (link to article on ICARRD)
