Regional and national workshops mark beginning of project between FAO and Countries from the Andean Community in Latin America

As part of the capacity building process of professionals involved in the project "Strategies and Instruments to Improve Food Security in Countries from the Andean Community", a series of workshops will take place in order to build common focuses among the different members of the project and train personnel in designing food security strategies.

This project is being carried out by FAO through its Technical Cooperation Programme along with the Andean Community (CAN), Agriculture Ministers from Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru seeking to support governments in designing mechanisms (strategies, programmes and projects) to improve regional food security.

The first Workshop was held from 21 to 22 July, 2003 at CAN headquarters in Lima, Peru with the participation of 20 people among representatives of Agriculture Ministries, national consultants from the member countries of the Andean Community as well as employees from this organization.

The Workshop allowed participants to identify the key actors that must be taken into account in order to improve food security. Participants also designed some 11 key strategies to tackle food insecurity situations along with 32 action initiatives.

Upon the workshop's finalization, participants presented a document with proposed guidelines for a regional food security strategy at the national and regional levels as well as an action plan and activity schedule.
