Sustainable Rural Development Information System
Adequate information to resolve rural issues of global, regional and local nature are useful and necessary but not often simple to access. To fill this information gap, the Sustainable Rural Development Information System (SRDIS) offers an on-line library with information resources that deal with various crosscutting themes in rural development.
The SRDIS, is a joint effort between the
World Bank, the
Centre for International Earth Science of the Columbia University, the
Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the FAO, the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The SRDIS website, at
http://srdis.ciesin.columbia.edu/Frame.html is organized into 5 sections:
- Indicators: providing publications and data on indicators for measuring human impacts on the landscape.
- Country Profiles: describing participation in global and regional environmental treaties, available indicator datasets and case studies for World Bank member countries.
- Searchable Catalogs: including resources related to sustainable rural development such as: web sites of relevant institutions, case studies, data sources, and print publications. Currently, the resources within the SRDIS focus on two topical areas: natural resource management, and decentralization.
- Sourcebooks: providing background information, methods, tools, and examples for project implementation.
- Case Studies: featuring over 300 case studies from throughout the world on local and national level experiences in rural development.
