Special section dedicated to access to food on the Development Gateway portal
On the occasion of the
World Food Day 2004 celebrated on 16 October, a cross-topic Special under the title
Food Access & Availability was published on the
Development Gateway portal focusing on the diverse range of issues that influence food access and availability in the developing world.
In this section the Development Gateway will offer an in depth analysis and information resources on the use of sustainable agricultural resources and effective food production (food availability) as well as food distribution channels such as food rationing systems, agricultural and trade policies (food access). This portal, dedicated to development issues around the world, has already published other specials on
Slum Housing,
Youth Employment,
HIV/AIDS and
Hunger among many others.
Enough food exists in the world today to feed the global population, yet hunger and malnutrition still claim 25 000 lives a day and 10 million a year, making malnutrition the world's leading health problem. To meet the first of the
Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of halving the world's hungry population by 2015, food supplies must be made available-and accessible-to the poor in the developing world.
