Dominican Republic: Thematic Group sets activities for 2005

The Thematic Group in Dominican Republic met in February and discussed its plan of activities for 2005.

Keeping in mind that one of the group’s main objectives is the improvement of coordination and follow-up to activities and projects in the Rural Development and Food Security sectors in Dominican Republic, members discussed the creation of a Geo-data system with information on the country’s maps and projects that are currently under way. The State Secretariat on Agriculture proposed a cross-checking of donor activities and beneficiaries’ needs in order to carry out the necessary adjustments of donor projects. In addition, the need to integrate civil society members and representatives from NGOs was also raised during the meeting.

Members attending the meeting included representatives from the Dominican Government, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, the Spanish Agency for Cooperation, the FAO, the World Food Programme and the French Embassy. Presentations and news regarding, the National Alliance against Hunger, the latest FAO publication on the State of Food Insecurity in the World 2004, the Millennium Project and the food security situation of the Bateyes region in Dominican Republic were also held during the Thematic Group’s meeting.
