Mexico: Thematic Group holds second meeting
Mexican stakeholders working in the rural development sector are gaining interest in participating in the activities of the Thematic Group on Rural Development and Food Security.
During the group’s second meeting, 60 representatives from international organizations, government, academic institutions and NGOs actively participated showing interest in working together to meet the Millennium Development Goals.
The opening of the meeting was held by the FAO representative in Mexico, Mr. Norman Bellino and a rural poverty analysis in Mexico was carried out by World Bank Lead Agriculture and Rural Development Economist, Mr. José María Caballero. During the first meeting held by the group, the Mexican Under Secretary for Rural Development, Mr. Antonio Ruiz carried out a presentation on an “Update of ideas related to the legal framework and public policies for rural development.”
The international organizations participating in the meeting included: the FAO, the World Bank, the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN-ECLAC), the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo - CIMMYT), the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the European Commission. Government representatives attending the meeting included: representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Foreign Affairs and Social Development among others.
