Angola: UN agencies launch new Working Group on Food Security and Nutrition
The National Thematic Group of the UN System Network on Rural Development and Food Security in Angola has been set-up as a sub-working group of the Thematic Group on Sustainable Livelihoods. The title given to the group by its members is “Working Group on Food Security and Nutrition”.
The sub-working group is co-chaired by FAO and WFP as the co-chair, and its members include UNICEF, UNDP, WHO, UNHCR, UNHRO and the World Bank. The Thematic Group on Sustainable Livelihoods was created by the Angola UN Country Team to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, especially Goals 1, eradication of extreme poverty and hunger and 7, ensure environmental sustainability. Sustainable Livelihoods was identified in the recently adopted United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) as one of the three main areas work to be developed in Angola. The other two technical sub-working groups of the Thematic Group are on Eradication of Extreme Poverty and Environmental Sustainability.
The main objective of the sub-working Group on Food Security and Nutrition is to contribute to the improvement of food security and nutrition in the country reducing hunger and malnutrition and improving the overall nutrition situation of the population. The group established its Terms of reference and will now decide on its priority activities.
In parallel, the constitution and launch of a National Alliance as part of the International Alliance Against Hunger are now being discussed with the Food Security Department and the assistance of the FAO Representative of Angola.
