Guatemala: Thematic Group provides information to coordinate relief efforts for victims of tropical storm Stan
The Inter-Institutional Group on Food Security and Nutritional Information (GIISAN, Spanish acronym) praises in its recent newsletter the coordination and efforts of civil society, international NGOs and governments in the response to the devastating tropical storm that hit Guatemala last October.
The Pacific Coast and the western portion of the country face severe food security crises due to flooding and mudslides damaging crops housing and roads. The sub-ministry of Nutritional Food Security and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food have been working towards minimizing the impact of the storm since the end of September. The government is working closely with the World Food Programme to provide relief and distribute food. FAO is performing an assessment to evaluate the impact of tropical storm Stan through visits to 10 districts and using the information of the MesoAmerican Food Security Early Warning System (MFEWS 2005).
