Thematic Groups - April 2006

Uruguay: Activities of the National Thematic Group continue to bear fruits in other departments in the country.

As a result of the expansion of the activities of the Programa DERSA (Rural Development and Food Security Programme) to other departments in Uruguay such as Artigas, Salto and Paysandú a series of information and communication material was developed.

Thanks to the support of the UN Resident Coordinator System consultants in nutrition, health education and social assistance produced and gathered the documents used to support the capacity building activities of the Thematic Group on food security and rural development project on a CD-ROM. The material produced includes presentations, educational games and songs on nutrition, as well as posters and information booklets on healthy dietary and hygienic habits.

The main scope of the initial pilot project, which was developed in 2001 within the Rural Development and Food Security Program, was to contribute in strengthening local capacities of producer groups in fostering improvements in production and marketing of agriculture products while promoting healthy diet habits. An effective partnership was created between several UN System Agencies (UNDP, WHO/PAHO and FAO) with the support of German cooperation agency GTZ, the Public Health Ministry, ANEP/CEP and the Latin American Center for Human Economy (CLAEH).
